SafeWallet v2.2 for iOS released.

SBSH Software announced today the release of version 2.2 of SafeWallet introducing support for the iPad. The new version has thus been re-designed as a universal app, meaning that it automatically supports both the iPhone and the iPad.

Auto-lock timeout lets you define how long you want SafeWallet to remain open in the background when you switch to other apps. This is an improvement since the previous version automatically locked itself up when sent to the background, thus requiring users to re-type the password every time. This proved to be annoying specially doing something simple such as copying/pasting username and passwords.

SafeWallet also includes a Password Generator that will let you create secure password on the fly. I personally know some folks who need such a tool.

For more info about SafeWallet go to here.

Download SafeWallet on the App Store.

Gmail gets updated with Signatures, Scribbles and Nested Labels.

An update for Gmail is now available in the App store and it contains some interesting new features. You now have the ability to create signatures just for the emails you send from a iOS device. This will not affect the one you set up in the web-based version of Gmail. For example, you can use the same signature as the web-based one and customize it further by adding something like "sent from my iPad/iPhone". Google also added a Vacation Responder feature, which is like a Out of Office email that, when enabled, is sent automatically when you're offline.

The third feature is the ability to scribble your thoughts and attach them to an email. You will find a scribble button in Compose mode with the options to change ink colors, brush size, eraser etc.

The Nested Label feature allows you to create like subcategories of labels. A bit like you do with folders and sub-folders; making them easier to manage.

And finally, there are the usual numerous bug fixes and improvements that Google does not want you to know about.

The update is free to download through App Store.

Introducing SkyDrive for iPhone and Windows Phone

I thought I'd post about the release of Skydrive for Windows Phone and iOS before going to bed. Skydrive is Microsoft free 25gb online storage. While deeply integrated into Windows Phone 7, there was no one place to manage Skydrive. The app was designed to help you manage your files on the go.

Skydrive for iOS works on the iPhone and iPad but is not optimized for the latter.

Microsoft creates Windows Phone simulator for Android and iOS.

No, this is not just a launcher. In fact, it's not a launcher at all but a real Windows Phone simulator that Microsoft created using HTML so iPhone and Android users can play with and get a taste of Windows Phone 7. They can do that by using a mobile browser and pointing to this address: aka.ms/wpdemo. I ran the simulator on my Nexus One and it runs smoothly. Even the simulator is fun to use.

Facebook Messenger upgraded.

Facebook Messenger is a standalone app developed by Facebook to send messages to your friends around the world. The update brings the app to version 1.5 and lets you see who's online and who's mobile and see when the other person is typing. Other features include:

- A faster way to compose new messages to the people you message most.
- Various performance improvements.
- Support for 12 additional languages.
- Support for iOS 5.

Facebook Messenger 1.5 is available on iPhone, Android and Blackberry.

I wonder why Facebook made the Messenger a standalone app?

Apple releases iOS 5.

The much awaited update is available for download since last night. So if you haven't got it yet, plug in your device to your PC/Mac and iTunes will notify of the update. If it doesn't, just click the Check for updates button and you will be invited to download it. I'm currently downloading it, so wait until I'm done before you do so :). The servers in Capertino are already overloaded and the file is 700MB in size.

Among the new features in iOS 5, the most noteworthy are the ability to navigate using five or more fingers to switch between open apps and close them as well; a new and free messaging app that works with iOS only to send messages, photos and short videos; Safari now supports tabs; iCloud gives you 5GB free online storage accessible from any Apple devices; a new notifications system etc.

I will post more about my experience with iOS 5 once I get my iPad updated. Stay tuned. In the meantime, watch a short video introducing IOS 5.

iBooks for iPad updated.

I do not have much use for iBooks on my iPad now that I have the Kindle app. Not that I have spent some time with it to search through available books, but the Kindle is more useful as it also works on my Windows Phone and desktop. Therefore, Whispersync will automatically sync my devices and thus allowing to continue reading seamlessly not matter which device I'm using. Maybe Apple has a similar technology for iOS but I do not have an iPhone to verify that. Anyway, this post is not about the Kindle.

An update is available for iBooks on iTunes with the following features, including some nice stuff for kids:

iBooks 1.3 adds several new features and improvements:
• Help your children learn to read with the new read-aloud feature included in select children's books from the iBookstore.
The read-aloud feature uses a real narrator to read the book to you, and in some books, it will even highlight the words as you read along.
• Enhanced books can now automatically play audio or video included with the book.
• Makes iBooks more responsive when opening very long books.
• Addresses an issue where some books may display the same page twice

Apple announces iOS 5 and iCloud.

Visit Apple website today and the first thing you will see is this: "iOS 5 includes more than 200 new features for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch". 200 features is a lot, but less than the 500 new features included in Mango announced by Microsoft. This post is not about Microsoft and Windows Phone 7 anyway but I cannot help notice that some of the new features of iOS seems to have been copied or borrowed from Mango.

One of those new addition is the ability to "Capture the moment at a moment's notice". This feature lets you open the camera right from the lock screen and press the volume up button to snap your photo.

iMessage lets you send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi and 3G. This is just like Blackberry Messenger with the exception that BBM does not work on Wi-Fi.

Because of time constraint, I invite you to read more on Apple's website

iOS 5 is due this fall.

Free Opera Mini web browser for iPad released.

One of my favorite browsers finally make its way onto the iPad. Opera Mini 6 claims to be the fastest browsers on the market, even faster than Safari, Apple's default browser on the iPad and iOS. Having used Opera Mini on Windows Mobile and Android, I can say it's really fast and elegantly built. Just sad Opera Mini 6 for the iPad does not let me sync my Bookmarks. Hopefully that will be added in an update.

Opera Mini’s great features include:
► Speed: Up to 6 times faster browsing, especially when on slower or crowded networks
► Data Savings: Compress up to 90% of data traffic
► Speed Dial: Get to your favorite Web sites with a single tap
► Visual Tabs: See all your open Web pages and quickly switch between them
► Opera Link: Synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial with a Desktop PC or other mobile phone

Undo certain Gmail actions in your mobile browser.

Sometimes when I'm using Gmail on my phone, I delete a message by mistake or label it incorrectly. Sure I can fish the message out of my Trash or remove the label and apply the correct one, but that takes several steps. Even just a few seconds is usually enough time to catch those annoying mistakes.

Now when you use the Gmail mobile web app, you'll have a small window of opportunity to undo four key actions: archive, delete, add or remove a label, or move a message/conversation.

When you take one of these actions, Gmail displays a yellow bar that recaps what you just did and allows you to undo it.

This bar stays in position even if you move to another screen (e.g. moving to 'Menu' from 'Inbox'). If you don't happen to catch your mistake in time, not to worry: all four actions can still be undone through other means (e.g. you can move a message from Trash back into your Inbox).

Try it out at gmail.com in the browser of your Android or iOS device.

IOS 4.3 Software Update is here.

Initially announced for March 11, the IOS 4.3 software update for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch can be downloaded right now; which is what I'm doing as I write this. Being new to the Apple world, I must say that I'm impressed with how they are on time with this and even ahead schedule. I know of at least two other software giants where it takes months for an update to be released and it is always after the announced release date.

Well now you know that the upgrade is available for you to download. Here's a step-by-step on how to proceed followed by a link to Apple website with a list of IOS 4.3 enhancements.

1. Connect your device to your computer. iTunes should start and alert you about the availability of a software update for your device.. You have the option to Download and Update or Download Only. Click whichever is best for you.

2. You may get a message from iTunes about transferring items that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. Click Continue.

3. The "Contacting the "Device-you-have" software update server" window appears.

4. The next screen shows you a list of new features. Click Next.

5. Click Next at the Software License Agreement screen.

iTunes will start downloading the 596.9MB file.

I will update this post after my download and update is complete.

This edition is called " Go Green, Get lucky" and will be a free update for Android, IOS, WebOS and Symbian. Watch for the update notification on your device, March 17 is just about a week away.

Friendcaller for iPhone, Ipod & Ipad updated to version 3 pro.

Using FriendCaller to make free phone calls over wifi VOIP is a breeze. I discovered FriendCaller when I had my Nexus one and was then able to test Friendcaller both on Wifi and 3G. With FriendCaller I am able to make phone calls without using headsets; Skype does not work that well without headsets. Similarly to Skype, FriendCaller lets you make free calls to your FriendCaller friends or Cheap calls to land lines and mobile devices.  I have used it on my iPad, so I recommend you give it a try. The app itself is free.

Apple adds Search filter to App Store.

I just noticed that Apple has silently pushed an update to the iPad that brings filters to the App Store. This surely makes searching the thousands of apps easier. As can be seen in the picture, the new addition lets you filter by Category, Sub Category, Release date, Customer Ratings, Price and By Device.
